Baldness has often been attributed to aging. That seems to be the long-held belief. Modern science has obviously put a damper on that kind of thinking especially when it has been proven that even young children can be victims of baldness.

Reading up on baldness introduced me to terms like alopecia areata (which reminded me of pasta arrabiata) and alopecia universalis (which in turn reminded me of "carnivorous vulgaris" aka Wile E. Cayote). I suppose when you are faced with such a stressful topic such as baldness, your mind naturally wanders off to more delightful stuff.

Alopecia is the all-encompassing word that signifies hair loss, in fact the word itself simply means baldness. So throughout this article you will see that word a lot as we attempt to identify different causes of hair loss and how to find the appropriate treatment.

Yes it is true that many in their ripe middle age still do not know how to distinguish between a flu and an allergy. Adding to the confusion is that many people use the word "flu" loosely to actually describe a "common cold". There are constitutional symptoms that distinguish a flu from the common cold.

So for the benefit of all the midlife folks (especially those living in the northern hemisphere because they are currently in what is described as "cold or flu season") who are still struggling with their runny noses or whooping coughs, we will attempt to explain in as simple terms as possible the characteristics of each condition. The purpose of this is so that people can understand their particular ailments better so that they can take the right treatments and prevent an extended bout with their sicknesses.
Continue reading "Differentiating Between A Flu, A Cold and An Allergy"

As a person approaches midlife, there are certainly many physical issues that all of a sudden become a focus of attention. One of these is the skin.

As one grows older, they suddenly become conscious of the fact that their skin is beginning to show more lines, more wrinkles, more age! What to do? Is it too late to remove those unwanted lines?

It is quite important to note that proper skin care begins with adopting a routine. Certainly not just any routine, but one that is disciplined. Here is a very simple skin care routine that you, regardless of your age, can adopt.

Menopause is often identified as a female condition. It might even come as a surprise to many that menopause is experienced by men too. In fact there is even a name for it--andropause.

Male menopause occurs usually late in the midlife stage, between fifty and sixty years of age. The signs and symptoms are very similar to what women go through. It is quite important therefore that in order to cope with it, one must be informed of such symptoms.
Continue reading "Looking Out For Male Menopause Symptoms"

It is a very popular notion that antioxidants play a significant role in reducing the risk of cancer. They do so by eliminating free radicals. Free radicals are the cells that have "gone out of control" and therefore, damage to the good cells.

A side effect of the damage to good cells is aging. Free radicals have been proven to directly impact a person's aging process. In fact they contribute significantly to premature aging.

The question now is--is it too late for antiaging therapy?

Depending on who you ask, depression is sometimes viewed as a temporary condition while others consider it a very serious disorder. Some say that depression only happens during puberty, others say it is the condition that defines midlife crisis, and still for some, it is a condition that only affects women.

The truth of the matter is, depression is not gender-selective. Depression affects men equally as it affects women. The problem is that male depression is seldom diagnosed. And because it is not brought to the attention of qualified professionals who can help, there is a trend for fatalities resulting from depression to be higher among men.
Continue reading "Men's Depression: A Potentially Fatal Condition"

When a man reaches his midlife stage, specifically when he reaches age forty, he may suddenly experience episodes of confusion and/or extraordinary stress. As a result his self-esteem may slip a bit. Sudden feelings of inadequacy and an unwillingness to try new things may also arise.

If you or anyone you know are exhibiting any of these symptoms, then understand that this is not something out of the ordinary. Even if that offers small comfort, men should accept the fact they too undergo a menopausal stage just like women.

Yes gentlemen, there is indeed a male version of menopause whether you like it or not.
Continue reading "Understanding And Handling Male Menopause"

The thought of entering the menopause stage usually triggers a certain level of anxiety in women. However women should understand that menopause is not an illness but rather a natural progression in a woman's life. Changes occur in the cyle of the reproductive system eventually, the reproductive system will cease to function. That's perfectly natural.

Certain symptoms may arise that indicate some form of underlying hormonal imbalance. In today's busy world which brings about a lot of stress and poor dietary habits, these signs of hormonal imbalance can be expected. Women with stressful careers or who are constantly exhausted from domestic affairs like looking after children and household chores may not take the time to address these signs.

It is therefore important for women who are early in their midlife stage and facing menopause to understand these possible warning signs in order to be able to ask the questions that will help in addressing these issues.
Continue reading "Early Signs Of Menopause"

Do you find that you are easily forgetful now that you're in your midlife? As the body begins to wear down, this is not uncommon. Although sometimes being forgetful can be trivial, people in their midlives should be mindful that the condition does not continue to get worse.

Nowadays, professionals are working to determine the benefits of a regular exercise regimen in improving cognition and reducing normal memory loss. This is so that they can better determine what specific exercises can be prescribed to improve memory. In the meantime, we don't have to reminded that physical activity does reduce stress which may be a contributor to cognitive malfunction. And those who are suffering some form of stress that's a result of being in a state of midlife crisis, exercise can certainly help in alleviating the cause of your forgetfulness.
Continue reading "Exercise Helps Boost Memory"
