One of the little privileges of midlife is that you get to spend a little more time off to enjoy by yourself or with your family. They can go off on a nice little vacation and temporarily put their worries behind.
After the vacation, you feel recharged and ready to take on the world again. It is indeed a relief because along with the little privileges you enjoy in midlife, some of your challenges are also a bit tougher. These challenges may not necessarily just be in the workplace or in your business, but they could be about your health, family members, or something just plain out of the ordinary.
If it is about your health, you may actually be able to hit two birds with one stone by using your vacation time to relax and at the same time take care of your health. A good first step is to watch what you eat while on vacation. Here are a few tips on how to regulate your diet when traveling.
Drink Plenty Of Fluids On Long Flights
When you are going take a long flight, make sure you drink a lot of water while on the plane. Although it is quite impossible to pack your own water bottle these days due to airport safety regulations, most planes are equipped with a water dispenser so that you can help yourself to as much water as you want.
The body easily gets dehydrated on long flights so you need to fill up on water every now and then. Filling up on water also helps you avoid eating some of the unhealthy food that some airlines serve because of the sensation of being full. The only inconvenience is that you might have to get up and go to the bathroom often but that basically is how it is on long flights.
Order A Special Menu In Advance
If you have some special dietary concern, you can call your airline in advance and order your special diet. All you have to do is tell them your condition and what types of food you are allowed to take.
You do not have to present any doctor's certificate to order your special diet so do not worry about this. In fact, even if you have no medical condition, you can also order your own special menu. Most airlines tend to serve beef for your meals. So all you have to do is tell them you would rather have fish or fowl.
Know Your Lodging's Amenities
There are lodgings and hotel rooms that have a separate kitchen. This is good because it allows you to cook your own meals while on vacation.
Some people though would rather not be bothered by cooking while on vacation and that is a perfectly valid reason. You should consider though that cooking your own healthy meals could save you from gaining too much weight because you ate out all the time. The choice ultimately is yours
Avoid Heavy Meals At Night After Long Flights
The burning of calories slows down especially at night before sleeping. That is why people are advised not to eat heavy before going to bed. This is more so when you are jetlagging after a long flight.
On the first two or three days after arriving from a long flight, eat small meals but certainly do not deprive yourself. You can munch on small healthy snacks in-between. Just avoid heavy meals.
Healthy Eating For An Enjoyable Vacation
Watching what you eat on the road also helps you avoid certain illnesses that come with the territory such as diarrhea or dysentery. These are the last things you want to happen to you especially if you are thousands of miles from home and unfamiliar with the local health services.
While you certainly should be adventurous and try some of the local cuisine, you must also let your common sense be your guide and not your tummy. Once you do that, you will definitely get to enjoy the best two weeks of your life and not have to go home worrying about how to work off the weight.
