As a person approaches midlife, there are certainly many physical issues that all of a sudden become a focus of attention. One of these is the skin.
As one grows older, they suddenly become conscious of the fact that their skin is beginning to show more lines, more wrinkles, more age! What to do? Is it too late to remove those unwanted lines?
It is quite important to note that proper skin care begins with adopting a routine. Certainly not just any routine, but one that is disciplined. Here is a very simple skin care routine that you, regardless of your age, can adopt.
1. Cleansing. Cleansing should be the first thing in facial skin care routine and the reason should be quite obvious--cleansing removes dust, pollutants, grease and any extra oil from your skin. This forms the basis for any other treatments that apply on your skin.
Cleansing basically prevents any damage to your skin. You can dab your face and neck with a good cleansing lotion or cream and gently massage it into your skin using upward strokes. Afterwards, you can use cotton or a soft tissue to pat your face and remove the dirt. Do not rub as rubbing is not as effective in removing the dirt because of the pressure being applied. You want the dirt removed, not impressed further into the skin!
Cleansing should be done at least twice a day--once in the morning to remove the grease that the body naturally produces during sleep, and in the evening to cleanse all the dirt that is accumulated during the course of the day's activities. Water soluble cleansers are recommended.
2. Toning. Toning can actually be an optional part of the facial skin care routine because toning is also a form of cleansing. This is basically a follow-up step after cleansing wherein all traces of dirt, grease and even excess cleanser are removed.
Toning lotions also helps to shrink pores on the face. Instead of using a lotion, some people prefer to use water so that no alcohol comes in contact with the skin. Toners are also applied the same way as cleaners, by using cotton wool. Afterwards, blot your face with a soft tissue to remove the toner. Toning is advisebale when you are constantly exposed to particularly harsh environments and lots of pollution.
3. Exfoliation. As we all know, our skin is made up of millions of cells. Skin cells eventually die and are replenished every three to four weeks. Exfoliation is the process of removing these dead skin cells thereby preventing them from blocking the pores. Once these dead cells are removed from the surface of the skin, the younger and healthier-looking skin underneath is revealed.
Exfoliation certainly is not required on a daily basis. Some recommend it for only once a week, twice if you live in harsh weather conditions. In fact, excessive exfoliation can do damage to your skin because chemical-based products are used. There are also tools that can be used in the process such as pumice, micro beaded facial cloths and even abrasive cloths.
4. Moisturizing. This is probably the most important part of your skin care routine. As the term itself implies, moisturizing your skin prevents it from getting dry. Dry skin is really undesireable because it causes the upper layer to break and die.
Our skin produces oils that naturally moisturize the skin. Applying moisturizers help in keeping these natural moisturizing oils from escapaing. At the same time, they help in washing away the dead skin cells and keep the pores clean.
Moisturizers are best applied on damp and warm skin. Applying them right after toning can help in producing very good results.
