For a lot of people, the stress level in their lives become directly proportional to their age. This means that as they get older, their stress level goes up too. Some experts cite this as one of the causes of midlife crisis.
One of the side effects of too much stress is weight gain. It's not uncommon for some people in their midlife stage to eat uncontrollably as a result of their daily stress. In order to put a stop to this, they should determine the root of their stress. It may be due to their lifestyle, personal problems, additional workload at the office, etc.
It may be easier for some to get to the bottom of their problem, but it may not be as easy for others. If it's already hard enough to cope with the ton of work, how does one expect to take the time to sort their problems out? Fair enough. So we'd like to offer some ways to keep your weight under control while you deal with your stresses.
- Reduce stress through healthy food choices. When lining up at the cafeteria, choose the vinegar or olive oil dressing instead of the thousand island; choose the tomato sauce instead of the cream for your pasta; choose the bowl of fruit instead of the cheesecake for your dessert. Get the picture?
You must be conscious of what you eat and learn about what are healthy and then execute the knowledge in your everyday routine. Knowing what are healthy and embracing them sets the tone for the rest of the day.
- Do not skip breakfast. If you do, it is a sure sign that you are always in a rush. When you are in a rush, it only adds to your tensions. A healthy breakfast loads you up with the right nutrients so you get your day off on a positive note.
- Bring some healthy snacks with you. Oatmeal bars, granola bars, whole wheat crackers, even low-sodium crackers are all fine. Keep them in your car, your briefcase, your purse, or stock your bottom drawer at the office with some.
Some people drink a lot of coffee or have some "instant soup", but these are not adviseable. Too much caffeine may get you agitated all the more while instant soups are high in sodium and other chemicals like monosodium glutamate. These will at the very least just give you a headache if not ruin your health altogether. Too much sodium also contributes to weight gain.
- Brown bag it! Your cafeteria may not have the healthy options that we listed above so what choice do you have left? Take a few minutes in the morning to prepare your own healthy lunch and bring it with you to work. It may not even have to be everyday at the beginning. Once you get the hang of it and start enjoying the great food you prepared at home, you'll soon be looking forward to bringing lunch with you on a daily basis.
- Do some light exercises. You've probably heard it before, walking is good for you. But you should be aware that there is a difference between a leisurely walk and walking in a hurry because you're late for something. If you do not have the time to walk, then to put it quite bluntly, make time.
- Take your vitamins. Remember these letters: B, C & E. These are your basic anti-stress vitamins. Actually the B should be for B complex because there are eight particular B vitamins that all work together to increase metabolism and support your nervous system. Vitamins C & E work together to strengthen your immune system. All these combine to fight stress.
Don't let stress get the better of you. This is especially important when you have reached the midlife stage. Stress only leads to all sorts of ailments, it affects your mood which very likely affects the people around you too, and of course, it causes you to gain unwanted pounds. The steps we suggest here are as easy as they can get. The problem is some people ignore simplicity and would rather embrace the complicated. In the end, stress consumes them, their weight balloons out of control and before they know it, finding a way out may not be as simple anymore.
