How many of us have been on a diet at one time or another? Celebrities peddle their diet plans on TV as if it were some magic pill that you could take to shed the unwanted pounds and stay healthy. To be able to stay healthy, one must have the desire, and when you have the desire you need to take some action. But before you can take action, there are some things that need to be straightened out.
Some people think that dieting alone is enough to keep you healthy. It may work for some who have a kind of unique physiology but they are the exception rather than the rule. For the rest of us, it's a matter of dieting plus exercising.
It's quite amazing but there are a lot of people well into their forties who still believe that eating right is enough to stay healthy. It goes without saying that they leave exercising out of the equation. The reasoning sometimes is that dieting is hard enough so all they effort that's expended on dieting is more than enough to make up for the exercising.
I really wish it were that simple. Well maybe it's not that simple because yes, dieting is hard enough. But diets need not be torture. There are many different diet progams now that allow you to eat your favorite foods, in fact as much as you want. But in so doing, you need to cut out some other things. It's usually a happy compromise. After all, wanting to stay healthy does entail a lot of compromising.
You have to always keep in mind that poor diet leads to diseases. So inversely, a good diet should bring about good health. Now before you go about searching for the diet program that's right for you, here are a few basics that you should know about:
- a good diet should supply you with strength and energy for you to carry about with your work and/or chores;
- always eat a variety of foods especially those that provide you with vitamins and minerals, iron and fibre;
- make it a point to have vegetables and fruits daily and avoid the foods that are high in fat and cholesterol;
- take enough fluids to keep your body's hydration at a constant level (remember when you were always told to drink 8 glasses of water a day?);
That's about as basic as we can be to get started on a good diet plan. In fact you might even find that if you follow these simple points, your adjustment into a full diet program will become that much easier. And when you're comfortable with the program, you can throw all the compromising out with the fat.
